So, a new weekly section starting today. PHENOTYPE is a quiz. Wild type is the default version an organism comes in. A phenotype is what actually got expressed. Every week I take one real thing from biology and work out which version of it you are, and the result comes with the research and with what your particular strategy costs you.

This week: Seven animals, and none of the questions ask which animal you like. Really it is measuring how you learn, what you do with a grudge, and how much of your mood belongs to other people.

A crow will hold a grudge against one specific human face for years, then teach that grudge to birds who have never met you. An elephant matriarch remembers water across decades of drought and does not get to choose which other things she remembers. A honeybee runs a million neurons, understands the concept of zero, and dies with its wings worn through.

Twelve questions. Two minutes.
